RATTLESNAKE CANYON February 16, 2008 was a perfect day for wheeling no matter where you were wheeling. It just so happened on this day eight Jeeps representing "Fun in the Sun" Jeep Club went strolling along Rattlesnake Canyon on up to Onyx Summit. Five club members (Matula, Rice, Pastore, Villa and Coursey) escorted three visitors on the run. Steve Beck driving a very capable Rubicon brought along friend Mike Rieser. Neighbors of the Rice’s, Brian and Inga Bull, brought out their JK for their first off-road trip and did a very good job of handling the rocks. Doug and Dillie Mitchell also came out for their first trip driving a stock Grand Cherokee with street tires. Needless to say, there were some moments of scratching and clawing but Doug got through the rock challenges with no body damage. This is always a good thing to happen on the trail. The trail through the canyon was a pleasant trip with lots of water running down the canyon this time of year. We made it through the few rock clusters unscratched and then we had lunch at Cactus Flats. I am always amazed at all the Joshua trees in this area and why they are clustered in this one particular area. After lunch, we started up the mountain to Onyx Summit on trail 2N02. One mile up the mountain the trail split into a different trail 2N63. The JKs went the low road while the TJs took the high road. The two trails meet together on 1N01. The high road was a little more difficult with mud and snow. We got sideways a few times and had to negotiate around a few trees that were down. Here at 1N01 the two groups got back together for the final stretch to the summit. Here the trail was covered with ice and snow. Ruts were cut out during the pre-run the week before making it a little more icy and dicey. We arrived at the summit at about 3pm, to air up and BS for about a half hour before the drive down the mountain. You could tell everyone had a good time by all of the jeeps covered in mud.
SIERRA TREK Mark your calendar for Sierra Trek August 7,8,9. Cal Four Wheelers has reserved the Cisco Grove camp grounds for the 6 through 9 of Aug Other than that no other news about the Fordyce Canyon run is available.
If enough people show up, Paul plans on turning the run into a poker run. Also, if there is enough interest among those attending, the group may be split to include a SUV type run. If you would like to go but don’t want to do the rough stuff please call Paul and let him know so he can plan accordingly.
NEW MEMBERS We would like to welcome our newest members Karyn and Louie Villa. She owns a new JK and likes to get it dirty, loves mud! Also, we welcome Mark Miller who has joined us on a number of runs over the years and is joining us as an associate member. Mark drives a TJ Unlimited. WELCOME!!!
JOSHUA TREE The April run to Joshua Tree will be an off-road geocaching run in the Old Dale mining district just east of Twenty Nine Palms. If you don’t have a GPS you are still welcome to join us and see how offroading and geocaching work together and see if geocaching is something you might be interested in.
Please check to make sure that you meet these minimum requirements. Click here.
