HEARTBREAK RIDGE Trip leaders Jay and Ellen Jimenez assembled the masses on Onyx Summit. The Matula's, Pat and Bob in their beautiful XJ, and Tom Pastore in his pocket flared TJ were the participants for the day. After airing down and disconnecting we departed the staging area about 09:20 for the 6+ mile trek to the beginning of the trail at 2N89Y. As we drove through Broom Flat we were entertained by two big Mule dear; a mom and a young buck in velvet. The rest of the trip was uneventful. Almost all of the major obstacles have been removed. Bob noted that there were unusual looking piles of rocks off the sides of the trail. "The Squeeze" isn't. We actually reached the top of the ridge before 10:30. On the way down we went through the wash… just sand, one rock, ho hum. We discovered the most difficult part of the run was 2N61Y access road back to 2N01. From there we took the short loop trail 2N70Y so I could play in my favorite "V" notch. The better part of that trail has been smoothed out as well. We did find an ancient river birch to have lunch under, otherwise we'd have been off the trail by noon. My recommendation: downgrade the rating from 3+ to 2+. Maybe we should let this one be for a few years.
Over Thanksgiving, the Schaffers and a few others are going to stay in Ballarat and do the trails around there. If you are interested give Rick a call.
