CLEGHORN GEOCACHING
By Ric Jones

Once again the might FITS seekers set out to find as many of the elusive geocaches as possible, this time over the Cleghorn Trail which runs just south of McDonalds off HWY-15 to Silverwood Lake. We had about 25 to get so it would be a bit of a challenge. We arrived at McDonalds at 8:30 to find almost everyone already there. We waited around until 9:15 for a guest that never showed then headed south to the trailhead.

Upon reaching the trailhead we encountered about a dozen of the new FJs and decided to squeeze past them and air down at the first cache. Fortunately they passed us and we didn’t have to contend with them any further.

The caches along Cleghorn were like we encountered on the Manzanita trail, each fairly close to each other so it was a lot of getting in and out of the vehicles.

After finding a couple of caches we came upon one with a watchdog, actually a watch rattler. For some reason we didn’t find this cache, the only no-find of the day. It turns out that the cache was actually MIA so we didn’t “not find” it. You think the snake had something to do with it? Jim did find a nice skin that the snake had shed.

About 12:15 we came to a cache that was about 250 feet up a steep hill along a fairly rough trail. We decided to have lunch there. Lunch was interrupted because a couple of our vehicles had to be move so a group of 3 Jeeps could go up the hill. We would encounter this group several more times during the day, and never on a positive note. They seemed to think they were the only ones on the trail. Speaking of which, there were quite a few vehicles on the trail with motorcycles, quads and 4x4s. At one cache we were lucky enough to witness a ranger bust a guy on a quad and one on a bike for riding without a helmet (stupid!) They had to walk back to wherever they had parked and drive to pick up the bikes. That probably wasn’t a fun hike.

We ended up getting 13 caches and only one no-find before calling it a day. It was kind of warm and we heard ice cream calling us from McDonalds. Almost everyone found at least one cache. I felt sorry for Rick and Paul, they were sweep and many times by the time they pulled up and got out of the Jeep the cache had already been found.

Having had nasal surgery on Monday I wasn’t sure if I was even going to be able to lead the run, but other than being very tired everything worked out.

Along for the fun were: Dennis & Casey Sullivan, Jim and Margaret Hein, Rick Schaffer riding with Paul Coursey, Tom Pastore, Dave Felando, and Pat and I.

ONYX SUMMIT DIRECTIONS
