CALICO RUN
By Rick Schaffer

I suppose, since Paul couldn't lead the Calico run, I'll give you a quick run-down. Obviously, you've seen the picture Jim Hein took of me nearly going over. Since we had no leader, I was "elected" to lead since nobody else knew where to go. The Kellys preferred their usual spot in the rear. Jim Hein followed me and Mike Nieto let his dad drive in number 3 spot.

The weather couldn’t have been better and there wasn't anyone else on Odessa t h a t we could tell. A couple other groups were meeting at the canyon entrance, but were heading up Doran.

Last year, when Paul led the run, I elected to stay to the left side of the waterfall instead of the usual (steeper) right side. Paul spotted me up and, although it was a tight squeeze, made it up without incident.

This time I tried without a spotter and didn't stay enough to the left. I started slipping half way up and wound up as you see in the picture. My front diff was hung up and I couldn't move rearward. Trying to move forward made matters worse for tipping, so we tried to strap me from the rear. Still wouldn't budge, and if it went anywhere, it felt like it would go over.

Mike checked up the canyon and found a large boulder wedged in the side of the canyon wall. With the help of a strap, I was able to reach it with my winch, and was able to pull myself up while Mike and Jim stood onto my left side slider to help keep upright. After that, all went just fine except that Mike ripped the rear corner of his Cruisers soft top ( a s usual) in the same spot he always does.

We had lunch at the giant waterfall (Sue Falls), then made our way back via Mule canyon and the mud hills short cut back to Odessa. We elected not to go down Doran because we still hadn't seen much traffic on the top and figured we would run into too much up-hill traffic.

Paul called around 6 and said he was on his way and wanted to run on Sunday. His son, Jeff, was headed up in the morning. He put a camper shell on his truck so he and Debbie were able to camp with us instead of staying in a hotel.
