THE GREAT BIG BEAR TRAFFIC JAM The trip did not get off to a good start, as soon as we got to Gold Mountain (3N69) we were greeted by a woman standing by her Jeep, with the hood up, and her saying that there were approximately 50 Jeeps ahead of us! We pulled over to air down and about half way through the process a Forest Service truck pulled up and most of us started up the trail to avoid the ticket that they now like to write us. Those who stayed to finish, soon caught up and we started up the trail. We soon came upon the 50 Jeeps and began to sit in traffic... reminiscent of the 405! Chuck noticed that all the Jeeps from the other group were on the side trail so we decided to take the main trail and get around them... we succeeded!! We continued on the trail without any problems. After Gold Mountain, we went over to Butler Peak where some of us went up to the lookout while the rest ate lunch and chatted. After lunch we decided that the trials were too crowded and that it was Miller time (or at least BBQ time), so we ran asphalt from Fawnskin all the way over to Green Valley Lake to the palatial Lobaugh cabin for the pot luck. We got there about 3:00 pm and had a very nice visit with lots of great food and conversations. Along for the fun were: Chuck and Anna Lobaugh, Paul Coursey, Rick and Suzy Schaffer, Tom Pastorie, and guests: Mike Miller, our guest Damon and his daughter and boyfriend, Brad , and Jon and Dale making it up for the food. BIG BEAR GEOCACHING What’s geocaching you may ask? Geocaching is a game where someone hides something in a waterproof container, a “cache” , and then posts it’s coordinates on various websites. Then people use GPS units to find the cache. When they do , they sign the log and maybe take one of the trinkets they find hidden, probably they put something else in the cache. They can then return to the website and log their “find”. With that said, what we are going to do is travel 1N09 in Big Bear where there are 20 caches hidden over the length of the trail, we’ll see how many we can find.
MEETINGS AT THE PARK June marks the start of our annual June through August BBQ and meeting at Simon Bolivar park in Lakewood. We usually gather around 6:30 for the BBQ and potluck, and a short meeting around 7:30. Guests are always welcome.
GPS TRAINING 102 Due to popular demand on July 13 at 7:00pm, I will be giving another GPS class, this one covering the use of mapping programs and their tie to the GPS.
