GOT SNOW! We met at the Ranger Station on Hwy 38 at 9:00am. Present were Paul and Debbie, Chuck and Anna, Tom Pastori, and guest Mark Miller. We left at 9:00 am and went up the hill to Angeles Oaks. As we climbed found more snow, yeah! Just past the store/restaurant we turned left to go down the hill towards Seven Oaks. There was snow all the way down the road. From Seven Oaks we took 1N04 and came out on Hwy 38 at South Fork. We stopped to discuss which trail we wanted to take from there and it was decided to try Gold Mountain.
After completing Gold Mountain we headed to Green Valley by way of 3N16 towards Crab Flats. Chuck said he knew a short cut into Green Valley so we didn't have to go all the way around. 3N16 which is normally a very boring road, but in the snow it is entirely different, kind of fun. We got to Chucks by-pass and the snow was a little deeper that expected, but all were willing to give it a try. Chuck and Anna went first. It took a little maneuvering, but he made it past the first obstacle and so did Mark. Well it was our turn, Mike said I know I can make it in one try. Guess what, we didn't. As we slid off the hill and into the wedge our front end was in the air. Because of the slippery conditions Mike was afraid to go back any further thinking we would slip farther down the hill on our side. As he is wanting to be strapped to hold down the front end everyone was too busy taking pictures and not getting the strap. Mike yelled out the window, "Come on you guys, I need a little bit of help here!” So Chuck strapped us up the hill. Thank You Chuck. The next obstacle was a big boulder, which would not have been problem in dry conditions. You had to head towards the boulder and turn up the hill at the last minute and hope to slide around the rock. Well, everyone hit the boulder in some fashion, except us (yea!). Before our attempt around the boulder, Chuck asked if we minded hitting the rock with our Jeep. Naturally I said yes I mind, but we were lucky, we aced it. We all made it out to Green Valley and the run ended at 3:00 pm and we headed down the hill. As we were leaving it started snowing big flakes and it was very pretty. All in all the day was great and the run was a lot of fun. CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE SHOW PHOTOS!
PINYON MOUNTAIN The meeting location for the Pinyon Mountain run has changed from Christmas Circle in Borrego Springs to the Scissors Crossing (intersection of Hwy 78 and S-2). This will be about 5 miles from the trail head where Christmas Circle would be close to 20. Consider getting gas at either Sunshine Summit if they are open or Warner Springs if you are just coming for the day.
Please check to make sure that you meet these minimum requirements. Click here. |
