SNOWLESS SNOW RUN
By Mike and Carol Kelly

We met at the Ranger Station at 8:30 am. Surprised to see that everyone was there already, except Tom Pastori. Waiting was Bob and Pat Matula, Paul and Debbie Coursey, Bradley Vaugh and three guests and Jeff Coursey.

We waited until 9:00 am for Tom to arrive. Everyone was anxious to get on the road regardless of lack of snow. Drove up the mountain to Angeles Oaks. Just past this small community there is a large turn out. We stopped there to air down, since our first trail started there.

After airing down the convoy started down the hill, towards Seven Oaks, in hopes of finding some snow. We did encounter some patches of icy snow on the shaded corners, which were pretty slippery if you didn't watch it. Stopped at Seven Oaks to regroup and decide where we wanted to go from there, since there was no snow.

From there we went back up the hill, by way of pavement, to the Barton Flats Ranger Station. It was closed for the season. Decided to continue up the hill to South Fork and take 1N04 back to 2N06 and head up the hill toward Snow Summit. Naturally, we saw the sign that said locked gate ahead, but that sign is there all year and doesn't always mean the gate is locked. So we voted to continue.

As we headed up the hill the view was beautiful, so clear you could see for eve r. Climbing, climbing, everyone just glad to be out and on a run. Then the gate, it was locked. Bob said he could assist, but since Jeff is an officer now, we didn't think it was a good idea. So, we turned around and headed back down the hill. Stopped in a sunny wide spot in the road and had lunch.

After lunch, Tom suggested that we take a trail off Onyx Summit, so up the hill we went. At the summit we pulled into the big turn out area and Tom took the lead. The trail ended up at the microwave towers and went no further. Again we turned around. Straight across from the trail we were on I noticed a dirt road that look promising.

So off we went for a ROCKY HILL CLIMB, everyone said lets go. I said let me get on top and see if it continues on. So we climbed the hill and looked back and everyone followed. No one could wait, didn't want to be the one who didn’t get to climb the hill.

Well, there was the snow. Icy snow too deep and icy to get any traction. So, guess what we all did again, turned around. By this time it was 3:00 pm and everyone wanted to get down the hill before dark, so we headed downward.

Some of us stopped at the Saw Mill in Mentone for dinner and others were anxious to get home. All in all it was a beautiful.

SNOW RUN RERUN

Since Rick Schaffer has been “assigned” to working nights and weekends for awhile, he had to cancel the Panamint run. So, we decided to give Ma Nature another chance at providing snow for a snow run. Mike said if they don’t have snow for this run he’ll give up!

MAY GPS RUN

Ok, now’s the time to get out and buy that GPS you have been thinking about getting with your tax return. I personally like the Garmin line. For the low end I would recommend the Legend at about $150. If you want a better unit and have the money then I’d recommend the Garmin V at about $250. Also, I recommend a RAM mount and mount it to the dash. Don’t forget the cigarette lighter adapter. What I’m thinking about doing is having a pre-run meeting as a training class and possibly downloading tracks and waypoints to the GPSs. If you have any questions or suggestions please give me a call.
