Calico Run
By Paul Coursey

Who schedules a Calico Run in November? Well, nineteen vehicles showed up on Nov. 19th, for a picture perfect day. A kind of day you would send back to Minnesota to the relatives.

This run we decided to make a Poker Run. Nineteen rigs anteed-up $160.00 to be divided in half; for a “highhand winner” and a “low hand winner”, to keep everyone involved. We drew a card at the drivers meeting and then headed up Mule Canyon Road.

Mule Canyon is an up and down roller coaster type of trail lasting about 2 miles. From there we hung a right to go up Odessa Canyon, after last years rain, the trail was unrecognizable for the first half.

The first part of the trail, through the boulder field was a little tighter than in previous years. (There must have been a lot of water pass through there.) At a mile and a half up the canyon, we came to the squeeze section. Some kind souls had added rocks to the bottom left and this really helped out on the pucker factor. Everyone made it through unscathed, but it made for some exciting Kodak moments.

Now we’re winding through the canyon to the top and headed to Bismark Mine where we met up with the Day’s, their guest Anna Kissel, and the Rices’s for lunch where we drew a couple more cards. After lunch we scooted down Doran Canyon for about 1½ miles, where we hung a right up a rock strewn draw, back up the hill along Wall Street. This trail doubled back to the Bismark and then continued back down Doran Canyon.

Two thirds down Doran, Jim Hein (aka Bronco Jim) sliced a sidewall on the front tire of his Bronco, so we changed that out. In the meantime, Anna’s son was playing around in his Rubicon and ended up high-centered big time.

By this time it was getting late, but we made it back to camp without using our headlights. Now at camp we drew our last 2 cards for the Poker Run., Bob Day won the high hand at $80.00 and Sally won the low hand for another $80.00, so much for keeping everyone in the game.

We also awarded the “Broken Axle Award” to Bob because we didn’t believe Bob would make it out without his jeep be in g sabotaged. After the entertainment we sat down to a huge pot luck dinner. One of the best we’ve ever had, with lots of hot food for a rather cool night.

One thing about driving the lead, you stay out of the dust. But on the other hand, you miss out on what’s happening with the bunch in the middle. I know there were some challenges encountered there, but I did not see them. Rick and Suzy’s nephew came out in his stock height Rubicon for their first time .

I know there was excitement there, as well as some other first timers to Calico. Everyone made it through, but I’m sure there were some good stories told.

Debbie and I would like to thank Caroland Grace for helping with the Poker Run draws, and to thank everyone for a really good time. We really enjoy Jeeping and being around the most friendly and genuinely good people around!
