MILLER RUN - IS MILLER TIME! Yes, we usually do earlier in the year but this year we tried something different. Miller in September came off really good weather wise, brisk in the morning, a little warm in the afternoon with a little breeze. Gathering before 9:00 a.m. in the parking lot of the Flying “J” drivers meeting and introduced a couple of “newbie’s”. I say “newbie’s” only to the Fun in the Sun because these two were trail wise. Matt Cutler showed up with wife & son in a Cherokee, no lockers & 31’s. They traversed this mighty dangerous trail with nary a moment of concern. The other was Jim Hein & wife with their Bronco II that looked ready for the Rubicon. Jim has all kinds of toys on board which gave us plenty of food for thought for the afternoon. Off to Miller’s at 9:00 a.m.,11 miles to the trailhead to where we met up with Jon & Dale, they were staying at their cabin. First stream crossing and into 4 wheel drive except Bob Matula, his Cherokee’s transfer case linkage popped loose. Jeff Coursey crawled under the rig and got it fixed as good as new. (It broke the first time). Bob didn’t want to hinder the group and was hesitant on continuing, but with coaxing & encouragement from the group he continued. We promised him we wouldn’t leave him behind. Up the trail we went, low water in the creek, smooth trail and that protruding rock on the right is still there. About a ¼ mile up the trail Jeff C. took a Dave Trice detour and became high centered. All four wheels turning and behind schedule we decided to strap him out. He didn’t care too much about the fact that his old man had to pull him out. Picture’s were taken. Trailing forward to our lunch area the trail was a little dry & dusty, so our nine rigs stretched out quite a ways to stay out of the dust. The trail was uneventful but still had the terrific views & scenery. Stopping for lunch the breeze died down and the gnats came out at the river crossing. Now up Alamo Mountain we go. Past the switchbacks, through Kabob Hill and past what is left of the rock garden, we hit the top of Alamo. New site, a permanent restroom greets the eye along with a permanent smell for the nose. After a pause and handshakes, we’re off down the mountain via the Alamo Mountain Freeway, taking Smokey Bear Road to Interstate 5. Thanks for showing up! I had a good trip and I hope everyone else did too!
