HORSETHIEF-JAY’STRAIL
By Ric Jones & Rick Schaffer

I guess this goes down as a Ric run even though it wasn’t your usual “Ric Run”, with Rick Schaffer and I as the leaders during different parts of the run.

We met at the Barton Flats Visitor’s Information Center on Hwy. 38 at 9:00. After a lot of BSing and waiting for a guest that never showed we left there at 9:15 and would pick up those who were camped at Heart Bar along the way. As we passed Heart Bar Campground they hadn’t left camp yet so we waited for them at Onyx Summit.

We took a short cut around Baldwin Lake and picked up Hwy. 18 to 3N03 where we aired down. We soon picked up 3N03Y the trail into and out of Horsethief Flats. The trail in was about as rough as last year and the nasty off camber spots that produced some pucker power were still there, but everyone made it to the flats without any problem.

Once we hit the flats we decided to check out what looked like a spring but turned out to be a stream. We had two choices of trails to get over to it and the one we chose turned out to be the harder of the two. It got narrow but did end up at the creek. We decided it was as good a place as any to have lunch so we did.

Unfortunately the ants also thought it was a good place for lunch, our lunch! So, a few people retreated to their vehicles.

On the way in we saw another vehicle a couple of hundred yards away parked by the creek, so Rick and I decided to go over and talk to them to see if they came in some other way. When we got there it turned out to he a Toyota pickup with about 8 packs scattered around but no one in site. I wondered how so many came in the pickup. A few minutes later our questions were answered when a bunch of Boy Scouts came hiking by. They had hiked in and the guy was just meeting up with them before their hike out.

The trip out was as much fun on the way out as it was on the way in, but at least this time the off camber was on the passenger’s side.

Since Rick Schaffer knew where the next trail we were going to do was (kind of) he lead the way out and north on 3N03. When we got on 3N03 I noticed that my steering wheel which was normally horizontal was now vertical. Since I had just had the front end aligned a couple of days before, the only thing I could think of was that they didn’t tighten something up and my front end was going to fall off. When we came to 2N02 I decided to call it a day and take a short cut back to the highway, just in case. Dennis and Tom decided that since they followed me out, they would also follow me home so they did.

Jay’s trail, the 2nd part of the run always seems to be hard to find the trailhead, but Rick found it and off they went.

Rumorhas it that Jay had a little problem and dropped into a rain rut and got a bit off camber and had to be assisted manually. They hit the highway about 4 and Rick & Suzy, Jay and Ellen, Jon and Dale and Mike and Carol headed back to their motor home at Heart Bar and the rest headed home.

Along for the fun were Rick and Suzy Schaffer, Mike and Carol Kelly, Jay and Ellen Jimenez, Jon &Dale Rice, Bob &Pat Matula, Tom Pastore, Dennis Sullivan, Bob Day and Sally Kinsey, Anna Lobaugh with daughter Laura, and son Brad Chersky and guest. Thanks to all for making it and I hope you had a good time.
