COYOTE CANYON
By Rick Schaffer

We met at Christmas Circle in Borrego Springs, on a wet Saturday morning, only to find that we were not the only group heading out from there. The On The Edge had several Toyotas and Jeeps, there were a several smaller groups as well, including a couple of H2's.

We took off shortly after 9:00 a.m. to get ahead of the others. Rain was threatening so we figured the water crossing may be an issue.

We aired down at the first sign of dirt. I asked Paul if he would mind lead taking the lead because of my recent history with ignition problems. He gladly accepted and we were on our way.

The trail showed signs of a huge water flow recently, but things seemed settled as we progressed. We heard that the 3rd crossing had been hazardous but everyone made it OK. Everyone also made the Lower Willows Bypass without incident. That’s the rocky hill climb before getting to Sheep Springs turnoff. As the last person reached the top of the bypass, the On The Edge folks were starting up, so we hurried on. We decided to continue on up the canyon to the end and return Sheep Springs for lunch. As it turned out, this was great because On The Edge were there for lunch and were just leaving as we arrived.

As we progressed up the canyon, following the river bed, concerns of flash flooding were being voiced. It did sprinkle on us a few times, and I guess you never can tell how hard it’s raining up the canyon. After all it did rain pretty hard Friday, clear into the late evening. As it turned out, no such thing happened, and the trip went well. The local desert ground cover was well in bloom indicating a possible beautiful spring bloom.

Arriving back in town, we all stopped for ice cream and discussed the day. Bob and Sally, Jon and Dale, and Suzy and I were camped at Peg Leg Campground an we invited everyone back for Happy Hour and a pot luck. We were joined by Paul and Debbie Coursey, and guests Tom and Barbara Moore. Other members on the run were Anna Lobauch and Laura, Dave Felando and his cousin Sveto, and Tom Pastore.

SAGA OF THE LAZY JEEP

You might remember back about November when Rick Schaffer lead the run through One Way Canyon and he had all the problems with his Jeep taking little naps, well it still is doing it. Four months and hundreds of dollars later the problem still exist! Several times he has thought that he’s found the problem, a loose wire here, a coil there, only to be lulled into a false sense of security, and having his hopes dashed by another episode of "How the Jeep dies".

Stay tuned for the next installment titled "How to makes friends with the tow truck driver", by Willy Makeit.
