JAY'S SECOND ANNUAL TOUR OF BIG BEAR On Saturday, July 19, 2003 we met at the City Creek Forest Service station on Hwy. 330 at 8:30am. There were 15 vehicles ready and waiting for their adventure of fun. Jay, Laurie and Kevin Anderson passed out "goodie bags," a special magnet sticker, antenna balls and Hawaiian leis. Many were dressed in Hawaiian shirts. Ric Jones dealt the first 3 cards for the poker hand which cost $10 per hand. We had a short drivers meeting and made the announcement that, "just for the fun of it," those interested should switch drivers. Well, what was meant was to let the co-pilot drive for a change. So, Laurie jumped into the driver's seat to lead the trip, while Jay sat there white-knuckled. The only others to switch were Grace & Dave Trice and Kim & David Ramirez. There was some talk about switching partners, but we decided that was another type of "fun in the sun" club without tan lines. LOL At 9:00am, we started heading for the trail. However, Jay and Ellen Jiminez never made it. It seems their Grand Cherokee didn't want to get dirty and refused to start until a AAA tow truck arrived. Mike and Carol Kelly went back and retrieved their potato salad for the pot luck dinner. It's a good thing since it was enjoyed by many. The Kellys, with salad in cooler, soon caught up with us and we continued toward Bear Creek. On the way were several creek crossings, pretty little flowers (plfs) and the Keller (not Killer) Cliffs. About 11:30 we reached Bear Creek. We decided to have lunch there and deal another poker card. There wasn't much shade for lunch, but we all got cooled off when Dave Trice (the biggest kid on the run) got out his squirt guns and began squirting everyone! Jon Rice got out his super soaker and Debbie Coursey tried to get back at Dave. She had her water bottle but, being blond, she forgot to take the cap off! If was a lot of fun! About 12:30, we left Bear Creek. Jay took over the driving and the pace picked tip. The drive going to Clark Summit has changed quite a bit. The Porsche Club, which used to hold rallies on it, has adopted the trail and has begun grading and clearing away some brush. Anyway, the trail is now a smooth road. We spotted at Manzanita Flats, this time in the shade, to deal the last poker card and award our raffle prizes. We gave the option of buying an extra card for $5.00 and had several takers, but the winning hand was Pat Matula's with 3 Aces. The total pot was $230 so she supplemented her retirement income by the sum of $115! All the kids and every vehicle got a raffle prize! The raffle prizes ranged from a crooked Corona beer bottle to Dodger tickets. Dave Trice won a box of Green Slime cereal for the best dressed! Dale Rice presented the Andersons with a bear fishing statue from the club, for all the effort he put into this run. After all the fun and excitement, we drove through Big Bear and ended the trail at the Anderson's cabin in Arrowbear, for a BBQ and homemade ice cream. Many people brought salads and deserts. There was a lot of delicious food! We were sorry that Rick & Suzy Schaffer couldn't make the run, but glad they were able to make the BBQ. It was a GREAT DAY! Sorry the Jimenezes missed it. Members present Jim & Chi Carvin, Paul and Debbie Coursey, Mike & Carol Kelly, Bob and "Lucky Pat" Matula, Jon & Dale Rice, Dave & Grace Trice, Ric & Pat Jones, Sherman & James Wallace, Jay, Laurie and Kevin Anderson. Present to see us off were Jay and Ellen Jimenez. Present for the food were Rick & Suzy Schaffer. (Guests were: Eric Brown, Marty & Marleen Goetsch, Bob & Lucy Lloyd, David & Kim Ramirez with Steven & David, Alan & Elaine Tulving with Eric.
