HEARTBREAK RIDGE/ONYX SUMMIT By Jay Jiminez June 21st, a gorgeous day, was the inaugural for the "Heartbreak Ridge" run. Members and guests gathered at Onyx Summit to check in, air-down and greet each other. After the obligatory drivers meeting we mounted up to embark on our journey when all of sudden the radio crackled with the voice of Steve Frank. He had been greeting visitors to the Mill Creek Ranger Station instead of reading his trail map for the rendezvous location. Our 11 vehicle caravan got underway at 9:45 AM to the turnoff onto 2N01. About 5 dusty miles later we all arrived at the trial head 2N89Y. As we progressed along this warm up trail the cactus flowers were beautiful. After moving onto 2N61Y we crossed a saddle and began our decent into the beginning of Rattle Snake Canyon. Just as we reached the much touted Heartbreak Ridge loop, Marty and Marlene Goetsch’s Cherokee, sensing the peril that lay ahead, pulled up lame with a cooked coil. Friends Wayne and Diana Begg offered to help by running into Big Bear to find parts. After shuffling vehicles we cleared the trail and off they went. The 9 of us started our accent to Heartbreak Ridge. As we bumped, clunked and banged our way up the trail there seemed to be the haunting din of Dave Felando fussing about how rough the trail was. About 2/3s of the way up, Eric Brown’s fuel tank skid plate tried to escape. It was quickly subdued and reattached. We lunched and relaxed on top of the ridge in the shade of a big juniper. The trip back down the loop was uneventful. Oh alright, except for yours truly getting high centered. The fates smiled on us as we arrived at the loop turn off. There was Wayne with Marty just finishing up replacing his coil. What timing!!! We regrouped and headed out for the remainder of the run. After a short respite on 2N02 we went over the side onto 2N70Y. Although short in length, that little loop has some gnarly spots including my favorite deep V notch with a left turn just for grins. Back on 2N02 we traversed to the junction with 2N01 where we bid farewell to Beggs’ and Goetschs’. The rest of us headed back to Onyx Summit to air-up, socialize and get ready to head for home or to Heart Bar Campground for a wonderful pot-luck dinner and good conversation. Participants on the run were Paul and Debbie Coursey in their TJ with son Jeff and friend Kristy in the other TJ; Eric Brown with friend Ryan in Eric’s Cherokee; Dave Felando driving wife Caroline’s TJ with friend Rick Pyle; Steve, Michelle and li’l Steven Frank in their YJ; the Schaffer’s, Rick and Suzy in their YJ; guests Howard and Barbara Johnson in their TJ; Wayne and Diana Begg with Marty and Marlene Goetsch both in Cherokees; and tail gunners supreme, Mike and Carol Kelly, driving their infamous Toyota Land Cruiser. The run was lead by Jay and Ellen Jimenez in a TJ.
MEETINGS IN THE PARK We had our first meeting in the park last month and it was a rousing success. We grilled hot dogs, had chili, and a great assortment of other goodies. I would like to thank everyone who brought something. This month’s menu is hamburgers, if you would like to bring something, please give Carol Kelly a call.
JAY’S TOUR OF BIG BEAR II AND POKER RUN On Saturday, July 19, 2003 Jay, Laurie and Kevin Anderson invite you to "Jay’s Tour of Big Bear II" and fun poker run. This year’s theme is "Fun In The Sun!" So think that way! (For example, beach or Hawaiian attire, Beach Boy’s music, squirt guns, etc.) Meet at the City Creek Ranger Station on Hwy. 330 at 8:30 am. please note earlier time, so we can have a short drivers meeting. A CB is required as it helps keep in touch with all the fun happenings. We will be on channel 3. Get there early, and you won’t want to miss out on those famous "goodie bags" which include a raffle ticket! Also, if you want to participate in the poker run, Ric "The Dealer" Jones will be dealing out the first 3 cards for your poker hand ($10 per hand). At 9:00 am we will adventure up the trail. We are hoping for some water fun in the many creek crossings! We will enjoy passing the Keller Cliffs to Bear Creek. At Bear Creek we will have a short stop and be dealt another poker card. Then, we will head up Clark Summit (about 8,000 feet). At the top of the summit we will have lunch, deal the last card and award prizes! After all that excitement, we will drive through Big Bear and end the trail at the Anderson’s cabin in Arrowbear. All members are invited to stay for a BBQ and homemade ice cream. Please call Jay at (323) 449-5603 no later than JULY 14TH to let him know how many are coming and if you are able to bring a dish for the BBQ/potluck. Any donations for goodie bags and or raffle prizes are appreciated! REMEMBER JULY 19TH - A DATE FOR "FUN IN THE SUN!"
WEDDING BELLS Matt Battaglia and Beth Hodges tied the knot in June. One of the nice things about Matt marrying Beth is that he doesn’t have to worry about having to get a kitchen pass to go wheeling since she is an avid Jeeper and was Jeeping long before she met Matt. We wish the newlyweds the best and hope they make an occasional appearance.
Please check to make sure that you meet these minimum requirements. Click here. |
