MILLER JEEP TRAIL
By Jim Bays

Sunday, May 11, Mothers Day saw Sir Jeepsalot and his Mom (what better gift than a day of Jeepin') along with Sir Talksalot on the pre-run of the Lockwood/Miller Trails.

Absolutely nothing happened, except for a very pleasant ride in beautiful weather and a relaxing lunch at the Piru lunch spot. A brand new picnic table and a BBQ pit now are residing there.

Saturday, May 17, the Campsite at Lake 0' The Woods was alive with warm bodies eager to hit the road to the trail head for a day of Jeepin'. Eleven Jeeps and nineteen people left L.O.W. at the stroke of nine for a day of fun.

The run was a success as far as there was no damage reported, no injuries, no fights, no nothing!! The trail was pretty rocky, and no speed records were set but we made very good time and reached the lunch spot about 11:30 and the top of Alamo Mt. about 1:00 pin.

While 5 people chose to return to camp and the freeways via the road, 6 hardy souls turned around and made the trip back down the mountain. All were very pleased that we did this as it was a whole new experience. It was a new trail as well as great views of the lower areas and the trail we had just come over.

When we reached the lunch spot again there were several Jeeps having their lunch and one of them claimed he had rolled Ins Jeep over 3 times! We established that he had indeed rolled Ins Jeep just above Yellow Jacket Junction, as we came across broken safety glass from his hard top and a window frame. We were stumped as to how it happened as there was not that much damage to his Jeep. The high light of the day was ... as usual, the "Pot-Luck" dinner Sorry if you missed it!

MEMBERS PARTICIPATING: Jim Bays, Paul & Debbie Coursey, Bob Day & Sally Kinsey, Jay & Ellen Jimenez, Mike & Carol Kelly, Bob & Pat Matula, Dennis Sullivan & Casey, and Dave & Grace Trice.

GUESTS WERE: Lloyd Matsuda, Phyllis Thompson, Jeff Coursey and Erik Brown.

MEETINGS IN THE PARK

It's once again time for the meetings in the park.

Starting in June and going through August we will be holding our monthly meetings at Bolivar Park on Del Amo in Lakewood. See flyer in printed newsletter for directions.

Anyone wishing to contribute to the pot luck please coordinate with Carol (bring chili).

MUD HUGGING JUDGE BACKS BLM, RULES AGAINST OFF-ROADERS IN S. UTAH

Salt Lake City - A federal judge ruled the U.S. BLM can close 250,000 acres of public land near Moab to off-road vehicles, including the popular Factory Butte area.

U.S. District Judge Bruce Jenkins said the BLM had the power to prevent or reduce environmental damage.

Jenkins threw out a lawsuit from the Utah Shared Access Alliance that said the BLM acted in 2001 without taking public comment or holding hearings. The Alliance challenged restrictions on popular motor trails, off-road travel, bicycling and dispersed camping in areas near Moab and Canyonlands National Park. The off-limits areas include Factory Butte, Poison Spider Mesa, and Gemini Bridges trail.

The lawsuit at least forced BLM to develop or update travel guidelines that accommodate some off-road travel. The BLM issued emergency orders since the 1990's closing hundreds of thousands of acres to vehicles. Vehicles still are allowed on about 90 percent of the 22 million acres of BLM land in Utah.

JAY'S TOUR OF BIG BEAR II AND POKER RUN

On Saturday, July 19, 2003 Jay, Laurie and Kevin Anderson invite you to "Jay's Tour of Big Bear II" and fun poker run. This year promises to be even more fun than last year. Meet at the City Creek Ranger Station on Hwy. 330 at 8:30 am so we can have a short vehicle inspection, air down, welcome guests, have a short driver's meeting and draw the poker hands. A CB radio is required, and helps keep in touch with all the fun happenings, we keep in contact on channel 3. Get there early so you don't miss out on those famous "goodie bags" which will include a raffle ticket! Also, if you want to participate in the poker run, Ric, "The Dealer" Jones will deal the first 3 cards for your poker hand ($10 per hand).

At 9:00 a.m. we will adventure up the trail. Last year even with the drought there were many creek crossings, so this year with all the rain you may need to bring your bathing suit or waders! We will enjoy passing the Keller Cliffs to Bear Creek. At Bear Creek we will have a short stop and be dealt another poker card. Then, we will head up Clark Summit (about 8,000 foot elevation). At the summit we will deal the last card and have lunch. After lunch we will announce the winning poker hand, 1/2 of the pot will go to the club the other 1/2 to the lucky winner This is also when we will have the raffle prizes and everyone will be a winner!

After all the excitement, we will drive through Big Bear and the end of the trail at the Anderson's cabin in Arrowbear. All members are invited for a BBQ and HOME MADE ICE CREAM!

Please call Jay Anderson at (323) 44905603 by July 14th so he will be able to plan for how many are coming. Any donations for goodie bags and/or raffle prizes will be appreciated.
