ACHEY BREAKY
By Jim Bays

As forgetful as I am, and a lot of other things, I will try to relate some of what took place to those who chose not to tempt fate on the Achey Breaky run of Feb. 15.

We gathered at the Slash X Café, out east of I-40, and after the usual stuff we all left for the trail at a little after 9:00 am. 16 Jeeps and 1 Toyota. I had intended to try and spend a little time doing some of the easier trails and kill a little time before getting to the main event trail. But, suddenly there it was.. The trail up to the sky. No one seemed to know just where the actual Achey Breaky trail is but the one we did very early on can justify being called that by folks that don’t usually take on rocks and other scary looking places.

The trail we took to the top is one impressive looking trail, and judging by how rough it got after 17 vehicles passed over it tells me a lot of folks were spinning their tires some. It was real smooth when Dave Felando and I pre-ran it.

Jon Rice rode with me for a while then we went over the "Pumpkin Eater", a place that cannot rightly be called a trail as the strategically placed boulders allow only the stupid to venture in there for "fun", a "challenge", to test yourself and break your Jeep! Well, my son Jim Jr. went in there and me right behind him. At this point I really want to thank Sir Jeepsalot for coming to my aid in guiding those folds that had better sense and didn’t follow me into well.... Rick showed me on Sunday where he took them and it was an enjoyable ride for me.

All went well until we came to "The Waterfall from Hell", where a lot of spinning of tires did take place and winch cables got a little longer. Dave Trice and the four guests from the Dirt Devils continued on after finally getting over the top, but nobody really got up that 15 foot wall unaided until Jim Jr. scrambled and bounced up it. But, then fate took over, his engine died, no vacuum, no brakes, and one foot more on top and gravity took over. But the lack of one more foot and a rapid trip backwards occurred. The sudden stop did a lot of damage to the right rear corner of his Renegade and Jim’s pride! As he said "From champ to chump in seconds!."

Then he did it all over again but with the aid of his winch. Some may have realized that Jim was using hand controls to drive his Renegade.

Now, according to a highly creditable source that everyone will believe (when I say it, nobody believes it) Grace Trice says that I didn’t even need to use the winch as I went up with little effort. What I did was... well, that’s a secret. But, I wasn’t about to go back to camp and face Betty with a broken Jeep!!!

P.S. I have seen devices that keep vacuum in power brake units advertised in the 4 wheel magazines.

Participating members were: Jim Bays, Jim Bays Jr. Paul & Debbie Coursey, Mike & Carol Kelly, Bob & Pat Matula, Tom Morey, Tom Pastore, Jon & Dale Rice, Rick & Suzy Schaffer, Todd Simpson, Dave & Grace Trice (good to see them out for a change).

Guests were: Lloyd Masuda & Phyllis Thompson, Mark Miller, Mike Crawford and from the Dirt Devils, Erik Brown, Danny Delp and son James, John Sterge, and Jeff and Nancy Jernigan.

TRIP MEETING LOCATION CHANGE

The meeting location for Dave Felando’s Rodriquez Canyon run has changed from the Christmas Circle at Borrego Springs to THE JUNCTION OF HWY-79 AND S2, JUST SOUTH OF WARNER SPRINGS.

Be sure to top off your gas at either Sunrise Summit or Warner Springs (more expensive).

RUBICON PLANNING

A few people got together at the Kellys on March 1st to start planning for the Rubicon run in July or August.

If you are interested in doing the run, please give either the Rices or Kellys a call.

CA4WDC

In reviewing their books, Cal 4 wheel found that they actually have more money than they thought and will not need to raise dues.

It seems that the people doing the transactions just needed a little training on how to handle the transactions properly.

In the mean time it sure raised quite a stir.
