TRIP REPORT

BIG BEAR THE ROUGH WAY
by JIM "LUCKY" BAYS

My son-in-law, Roger Kietzer, and I left my house at 5:30am and proceeded to make an uneventful but quick trip (no traffic) up to Blue Jay where we consumed a hearty breakfast and then a leisurely drive into Lake Arrowhead Village arriving at McDonalds at 7:45 am. Then I got out the sign-up book and got ready for the big rush of eager Jeepers to sign in.

Here they come!! 8:05 to 8:20 they came, all bright eyed and bushy tailed, ready for the trail. Tom Morey showed up with his daughter Brenda to lend immoral support, and he showed us a way to get into Deep Creek which was much funner than Hook Creek Road with all of its hazardous "speed bumps". 2N25 and 2N27Y proved to be very enjoyable with just enough "roughness" to make it a fun warm-up!

When we arrived at "Deep" Creek the DUST was in the air! Not a drop of water was crossing the trail and two very nearly stock Jeepers were flailing about in the rocks!

The red one got across just as we arrived and we were sure the black one was going to be sold for scrap before he could get across. Paul really made all his investments pay off as he came across in great style, just short of a heart attack! When the Wallace
Wagon couldn't make it over the rocks, and the clutch was smoking so bad we were afraid it was on fire, James pulled out with some struggling and "Doc" Wallace went back to camp with him. After that, we all handled what little "ruff stuff" we came across with little trouble.

About 3/4 of the way through I became a problem....again. "Miss Behavin" lived up to her name and got stubborn, stopping every once in a while. However it gave us some 10-100 moments and someone to cuss out, relieving any antisocial feelings.

At the "second" rock garden, Todds transfer case started flopping around and he made a quick trail repair with shock absorber bushings and headed home on 3N14. Near the very end of 3N93, we encountered at least 15 Toyota pick-up trucks headed the other way and that held us up some more. At the end of 3N93 at 3N16, we took a "new" trail, 3N08. It came out on 3N16 again closer to 3N10. A short drive east on 3N16 and we were on our way to more adventure on the famous "John Bull" trail.

"Miss B" crapped out again with my/her front wheels perched on a small waterfall near the base of the trail over John Bull. I could hear the chatter of girls up ahead and Rick Schaffer walked up there to investigate. It turns out that a large group with some stock Jeeps got into a hole and had the trail blocked trying to get the stockers out of trouble. So... it didn't take long for the crew to make up my mind about heading to Big Bear for dinner at Boo Bears!

I then led the group into a new and unfamiliar place where we "turned around" and headed for Big Bear. We weren't lost you understand!

We started with 10 vehicles and ended with 7, a good "drop out" rate for a difficult run!

Along for the fun were:

Myself and son-in-law Roger Kietzer, Jay & Laurie Anderson, Paul Coursey and daughter Amy, Steve Frank and friend Mike Winto, Jay Jiminez, Rick & Suzy Schaffer, Todd Simpson, Tom Morey and daughter Brenda, and the Wallace crew of Sherman, James and Greg, along with Alan and Curtis Kldenman.

MEETINGS IN THE PARK

We had our last park meeting this last month and the September meeting will once again be at Don-A-Vee in Placentia.

I would like to thank everyone for bringing all the great food the last three months. It’s really been fun, and I hope no one got sick from my burgers!

CLEGHORN CLOSED

The area from Cleghorn road off I-15 to Hwy 138 has been closed do to the extensive fire that had a while back.

The Silverwood area on the North side of Hwy 138 remains open.

FLORIDA ENACTS LAW

Our old friend Jeb Bush, governor of Florida and the one that kept us from having to put up with Gore has come through again.

He signed legislation that would require the Division of Forestry to develop and maintain a system of OHV areas and trails on public land.

This legislation requires that they publish a guide book and to include laws and regulations relating to the program, and maps of the system’s OHV areas and trails.

This is being called a "milestone trails law" in Florida, and seems to be the first step towards improving Florida OHV recreation.

ELECTIONS

Club elections are normally held in October, every other year.

Well, this is the "other" year, so it’s time to throw your hat into the ring and run for that position that you have been longing to have.

If anyone has a burning desire for any of the board positions, just let one of us know, I’m sure that it won’t take too much arm twisting to get us to step down.

If no one comes forward, you are stuck with us for another 2 years. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
