TRIP REPORT RATTLESNAKE CANYON Once again, this run drew a lot of guests. Four vehicles from the 4X4 Freelanders, four from our club, and one clear from Hawaii joined 8 club members this time. As reported, the main trail was really easy. Hardly worth 4WD except a couple of spots near the springs. Hardly any water at all this year. The Wildlands Conservancy did put up cattle guards as promised, thereby keeping the trail open for travelers. Travel went quickly so we all went into Pioneer Town for lunch. I expected only those who didn't want to try the more difficult trails later on to go out that way. It turns out that the town was having a gun fight show, so we all hung around for that. There's no more ice cream cones at the bowling alley. They now have an ice box where you can help yourself instead. I guess our last trip in frazzled the poor waitress. Those that wanted to try the hard stuff followed me back up to find Jay Jimenez's long lost trail that we managed to find last year. Having not taken notes, I bypassed the correct entrance thinking it was further up the road. After taking the wrong trail (although a bit rough), we stopped to consult the map. Problem is, the trail isn't on the map. Remembering that we came out last year up ahead, we decided to continue up toward Big Bear. At the intersection of 1N03 and 1N02 we made our turn toward Onyx Summit. While looking for the trail, a gal rides up on horse back and asked if we could help her group. There were 18 women on horses waiting for their support group who never showed. The horses were tired and thirsty and they still had a four hour ride to Pioneer Town. I asked everyone to leave as much water as they could, and a couple of the Freelanders headed out toward Big Bear to see if they could find their group. Having found our trail, the rest of us headed up to the rocks. This was another interesting time for the guests. They did great getting to the top and back down again. Even Tom Morey got his Kia Sportage (with a 3 inch lift and manual locking, hubs!) up the rocks. This is really when you need a video camera! We finally got off the trail about 6:30. Folks aired up at Onyx Summit and headed their separate ways. No damage, and everyone had a great time. Club members: Jay & Laurie Anderson, Jay & Ellen Jimenez, Mike & Carol Kelly, Bob & Pat Matula, Tom Morey with daughter Heather and guest Tim Buffington with the other daughter Amanda, Brad Quick and daughter Sara, Fick & Suzy Schaffer, John Lee and girlfriend. Guests: Tom Pastore, Paul & Debbie Coursey, Howard & Barbara Johnson, Bob Britton, Tom Purvis, Dick Kutsch, Shawn & Cathy Persich, Sam Camp w. Bill Lindeman & Leslie Camp.
MILLER JEEP TRAIL RUN The Rices have one again invited all those attending the Miller run over to their cabin after the run for a BBQ. If you are planning on attending the BBQ, please call the Rices at (3 10)376-3824 so they will know how many to plan for.
MEETINGS IN THE PARK With the weather getting better, we are looking at holding more meeting at the park. In the past, we've had one meeting at the park in Lakewood, and this year we are thinking of having the July, August and September meeting there and still include the wiener roast. What do you think? A good idea?
WEBSITE CHANGE We have a new club website URL it is www.fits4x4.com. Steve Frank has donated the first year's charge for the domain name, and will be hosting it on his work's server. Jim will probably continue to maintain it.
BIG BEAR THE HARD WAY On August 24th I will be leading the run known as "Big Bear, the Hard Way! " Well, as long as it is billed as the "Hard Way" I think it should be the hard way. So read up on the requirements NOW for trails rated 4 and if you think you qualify, feel free to give it your best shot. High clearance is the best thing to have (besides a good tow strap) and of course, traction aids, such as lockers or limited slip in the "diffs". On a 4 rated trail, it is a good idea to have a roll cage, just in case. Only once has a roll cage really come in handy, but we won't talk about that! In August of 2001, the Trices led the event and the write-up that Grace did for the "Fits Monthly News" so inspired me, that I think I will try to duplicate their run. Meeting at McDonalds in Arrowhead Village, EARLY !!, about 7AM for breakfast and git gone as soon after that as possible. No later than 8:30 as it is going to be a long day!! Deep Creek, 3N94, 3N16 to 3N93 for the rock gardens, then on to 3NI0 John Bull, across Gold Mountain. Four of the roughest trails in the area, and if we have time, we will look around for some more! However, my guess is we will be too darn tired to do anything but go find some place to rest and EAT.
JAY'S TOUR OF BIG BEAR On Saturday, July 20, 2002 Jay, Laurie and Kevin Anderson invite you to "Jay's tour of Big Bear and poker run". This offroad adventure promises to be fun for all ages from young to young at heart! Meet at City Creek Ranger Station at 8:30 AM so we can have a vehicle inspection, air down, welcome guests and have a short drivers meeting. A CB is required so you won't miss out on all the fun, we keep in contact on channel 3. At 9:00 our adventure of fun begins. To start, each vehicle will be given a "goodie bag" including a raffle ticket. If you participate in the poker run ($10 per hand) you will dealt the first 3 cards for your poker hand. Then we will travel 16 very scenic miles including about a dozen creek crossings, PLF's (pretty little flowers) and the famous Keller Cliffs to Bear Creek. At Bear Creek we will enjoy a short stop and be dealt another card. Then, we will continue climbing up the mountain (approximately 8,000 feet) to Clark Summit. Here is where you will be dealt the last card. A grand prize will be awarded for the winning hand. Adult and children's raffle prizes will also be awarded. About 2PM we will resume out "Tour of Big Bear" and fun! More details to follow in next month's newsletter. REMEMBER JULY 20TH - A DATE FOR FUN IN THE SUN!!
