TRIP REPORT

TRUCKHAVEN
A second hand report

Since I didn’t get an official trip report, this is the story related at the last meeting.

We came, we went up and down and around some hills, and went home.

Ok, that’s pretty much the 25 words or less version, but in reporting on Truckhaven there isn’t a whole lot more you can say. The area is made up of mud hills of varing sizes and shapes. There are many canyons and hills, and almost every trip into the area brings you to different areas.

Along for the fun were Rick & Suzy Schaffer, Jon & Dale Rice, Mike & Carol Kelly, Bob & Pat Matula, and Sherman Wallace. In other words, the "regulars."

SOME PLACE TO CONSIDER

A few months ago off-road.com did a piece on the Piaute ATV trail, in south central Utah. Though the article was written with the ATV person in mind, the area is open to all types of vehicles. As they put it, "if you can ride it, it’s welcome on the trail".

The trail itself is a loop of about 250 miles, with many side trails, loops, and spurs branching off of it.

The one thing about this trail that makes it unique is that it’s highly supported by the locals. Many of the small towns along the route have made provisions for off-road vehicles (ATVs and motorcycles) to be able to ride on the city streets for access to gas and food.

If you would like more information on the trail, check out www.marsyvale.org and click on the Paiute ATV Trail.

I’m would like to visit this area next year and tour it on my bike, though doing it in a Jeep wouldn’t be bad either.

KERN COUNTY

The Kern County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution to assert Kern County’s right to protect access to roads and trails as provided by Revised Statues 2477. About 15 people, including 7 from Ridgecrest, attended the supervisors meeting to support the proposed resolution and several took the opportunity to provide comments. Kern County Supervisor Jon McQuistion spoke in support of the resolution. There were no obvious opponents present and no one spoke against the resolution.

During the time for comments on on-agenda items, they took the opportunity to speak against Senator Boxer’s proposed wilderness legislation. They requested that the Board of Supervisors oppose new wilderness in Kern County!

SACRAMENT0
(March 4, 2002)

A Coalition of motorized recreation groups and a local equestrian organization today filed a motion to intervene against a trio of conservation organizations which earlier had filed a lawsuit to close 786,000-acre Eldorado National Forest to all motorized recreation.

The plaintiffs in the lawsuit that was filed with the U.S. District Court in Sacramento, the Center for Sierra Nevada Conservation, Center for Biological Diversity and California Wilderness Coalition, charged Eldorado National Forest with violations of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the National Forest Management Act (NFMA).

"We are absolutely appalled that this environmental group has filed suit against the forrest to close the entire area to all types of motorized recreation," said David Douglas, president of the California Association of Four Wheel Drive Clubs. "Our association is joining other recreation organizations to intervene on the part of many individuals and groups that choose motorized recreation to get into the backcountry. Many times, we afford these trips to people with mental and physical disabilities. There is simply no other way for these people to have access to these scenic areas."
