TRIP REPORT

CLEGHAMMER
by Jim "Lucky" Bays

You should have been there, 9 of us were, and glad of it. It was a beautiful day and the views were great. The trail was a little dusty, but not bad and for the most part, no one had any trouble negotiating the obstacles including the Land Rover on it's maiden run, though there was some white knuckle moments on their part. I thought for sure someone would have a problem that I'd be able to report, and the only one was me. I lost the whip of my antenna and vapor locked. This gave me a good excuse to have lunch while it cooled down. The trail had dried up enough from the last week to make it a little slippery in places but still had enough traction for crawling up some very steep and rocky hills. Anyone who enjoys "notching" sure missed out here, as a lot of the run was notches, presenting some fun challenges. Some "pin striping" was achieved thru the "jungles", but no major damage to the vehicles. We only encountered a few quads and motorcycles, and about six other four wheelers going in the opposite direction. We arrived at Hwy. 138 at about 2:30 with a couple of hours more for the scheduled run. At this point four vehicles decided to call it a day, with the call of the Laker's game being the reason for one of the "deserters", and enough fun for one day for the rest. This left five hearty souls to take in the picturesque part of the trip to Monument Peak. After a short distance, one of our group decided that the call of ice cream was to strong, so he turned around and headed home, leaving just the four of us. Once we got to Monument Peak, Rick Schaffer suggested we continue on over the road we were on down to Devore. Well, this wasn't a short cut by any means., but it put us out at a point with air, rest room, gas, and ICE CREAM!!! Way to go Rick! The flowers and their scent were everywhere. I would like to thank Ric Jones for taking care of those who decided not to take some of the "hard" trails and stayed on the main road. I would like to have had him and the others who bailed early to have seen the beauty of the drive to Monument Peak and down to Devore. Those participating FITS members were: Jim Bays, Leader, Jay & Ellen Jimenez, Ric Jones, Bob & Pat Matula, Jon & Dale Rice, (great job Dale), Rick & Suzy Schaffer, and Dennis Sullivan. Guests were: Adam (?), and Blair Bennink, Don Stenger, Kevin, Adriene & Ashley Tahir. Thank you all for a great run!

CLEGHORN PRE-RUN
by Jim Bays

I only had one courageous soul, Tom Morey, to help me on the pre-run for Cleghorn, or as a hand painted sign that someone had put on the trail read "Cleghammer". At McDonalds while waiting for Tom, a guy with a built CJ-5 came over and said his club was doing the Indian Reservation and he didn't like breaking his vehicle, so he asked if he (Tim Lewis from the Inland Empire Jeep Club) could tag along. So Jim, Tim, and Tom headed off for the hills, hills and more hills. We started at the Cleghorn exit of I-15, some new territory for me. I was completely lost when we reached the point where I started my half of the run. I think I was running around in circles.! Finally we came to a place that had a sign and a large map on it. It then became clear to me. First though, I went up the main road looking for the starting place and decided to take a fire break down as it was shorter, and it turned out to be the trail I was looking for, the one that I broke my transfer case on last time! We continued on and didn't pass up one section of the fire breaks, talk about an E ticket ride! The potential is there but we didn't have any problems. The only problems were provided by mother nature with wind and rain! It was blowing in all directions at once and we got sopping wet since all 3 Jeeps didn't have the sides on. We ended up with leaves, flowers and inch worms in the Jeeps by the bunches. By 12:30 we hit Hwy. 138 and still had a ways to go, so we had lunch and a great view of Silverwood Lake but got rained on and almost blown away! The road up to Monument Peak was a beautiful drive, but the bummer was that they had bladed the pole line road and the only challenge was the hair pin turn about half way through. The road on the other side of Silverwood was rough but passable. That's all we had time for, it was 5:00pm and we were tired.

BBQ AND POTLUCK

We enjoyed the impromptu BBQ after the Miller run last year so much, we would like to extend an invitation to do it again. This year there is a choice of two runs scheduled for Saturday, June 23rd. First our annual Jerry McDonald/Miller Jeep Trail rated 3+ run, and a new run the back way up to Frazier Mountain rated a 2, this additional run should add something for everyone. Refer to trip run information for detail. Hopefully everyone will be able to fit the BBQ/Potluck into their weekend plans. Please bring you own drinks and a potluck dish or snacks to share. Please give us a call and let us know you are coming, and what you will be bringing, that way we can have a steak with your name on it. We are looking forward to seeing you at "Our Place" in Pine Mountain Club. Jon & Dale Rice HOME: (310) 376-3824 PMC: (661) 242-4127
