TRIP REPORT TRUCKHAVEN We met at the hill on S-22 at 9 a.m. The weather was windy and scattered clouds. The hills around us were covered with black rain clouds. The wind was so strong it was blowing the rain from the surrounding areas into our area. We left the meeting area approximately 9:30 in search of a rocky hill climb that Mike remembered, instead of using the usual entrance to Truckhaven. After checking out a couple of canyons, the old memory clicked in and we found the right area. This being Sherman's first run in over a year be said it was quite an E-ticket ride. Since some of the group had never been in this area before, we decided to work our way over to the Calcite Mine. After the Mine we started searching for a somewhat comfortable place for lunch, this wasn't easy with the wind blowing so strong. During lunch Steve Frank voiced his desire to do a little "notching". For those of you that don't know what notching is, it's traversing VERY narrow canyons that are but a "notch". So, we headed for the notches area. It took some finding, but we made it. We just picked our poison and went for it. We did this for about an hour, then worked our way back to Salton City and ice cream. All in all, it was a good run without any mishaps. Even Sherman in his new Jeep (very clean YJ) made it through without any mechanical problems! Speaking of Sherman, he is one of our founding fathers, and who has been able to only make a couple of runs in the last two years or so. It's good to have you back, and hope to see more of you these days. Along for the fun were: Rick & Suzy Schaffer, Tom & Heather Morley, Jim & Betty Bays, "Suzuki" Todd Simpson, Sherman & Jim Wallace, Steve Frank & daughters. Since we have so little money in the treasury after buying the T-shirts, we cannot afford to "front" anyone's CA4WDC dues. If you do not pay by the June 27th meeting you will be responsible for your own CA4WDC dues. If for some reason you plan on not paying the dues and thus dropping out of the club, please let Rick Schaffer know.
HI-DESERT RAFFLE Rick Schaffer picked up a portable power pack for the club to donate at Hi-Desert this year. JUST ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL We finally made the donation to CA4WDC for the "brick" for their building fund. We voted over a year ago to donate to the fund, and finally got around to it.
SIR JEEPSALOT DOES IT AGAIN While my brother-in-law was admiring my CJ-5, down on his knees looking under the front end, he exclaimed, "OH OH! The frame is broken!". Well, instead of getting hysterical, I was relieved to know what it was, that was making those highly suspicious sounds every once in a while. I was under that rig quite often and never could find anything that looked like trouble. So then, I parked Betty's Cherokee in the street and backed the CJ into the garage and began taking it apart. At this time I decided I bad better let Rick Schaffer know that I wouldn't be making his Rattlesnake Canyon run, as I was "Broke!" The next thing I knew, Rick was at my door asking, "What's this I read on my email all about?" He said that upon reading my e-mail he asked Suzie, "What do we have planned for Saturday?" Well, Saturday comes and so does Rick Schaffer with his wire fed welder and ready to do business! I had removed the fenders, radiator & grill, the tires and front axle and springs in order to get better access to the frame on both sides. And it paid off as Rick was able to do the most fantastic repair job I have seen in a long time!!! Thankfully, I was able to get it back together in time for his run! It sure is good to have friends like "Sir Jeepsalot." Mike & Carol Kelly also came over to lend immoral support! I was glad to see them to!
CHANGE OF PLANS There has been a change of plans for the runs for the next couple of months. The first is Cleghorn. To open the run up to more vehicles, Jim has decided to have two groups doing the run. One group will do the hard stuff while the other group parallels them on the easy road, lead by the king of easy runs Ric Jones. Something for everyone! Also, on the Miller Jeep Trail run, our perennial leader Jerry MacDonald will not be able to lead it this year, so Rick Schaffer will be filling in for him. Also to add to it, we will break into two groups, one going up Miller, while the other does an easier run of Frazier Mountain, and we will join up after the run at the Rices' place for a potluck and BBQ. The Rices will be providing the steaks and you'll need a pot luck item, or at least provide your drinks.
15 MINUTES OF FAME Last month, Brad Quick had his 15 minutes of fame. On radio station KLOS they have a contest where they "Put you on the payroll." The way it works is, if they announce your name you have to call in and they will pay you $100 an hour. They announce a different name each hour and if the person for that hour doesn't call in, you "stay on the payroll." Brad was able to stay on the payroll for a whole 2 hours. Way to go Brad!
30th Annual HI DESERT ROUND UP "TRAILS BY FIRE" May 25, 26, 27 & 28, 2001 The HI DESERT ROUND UP is a California 4 Wheel Drive Association sponsored event held every year on Memorial Day weekend. For several years, it has been held out in Stoddard Valley, about 10 miles south of Barstow California, off Highway 247. It is a popular fun-filled getaway weekend for singles, couples and families who enjoy 4 wheeling, playing games, winning prizes and just going out to relax away from the city out in the desert. Many different types of 4-wheel drive vehicles are brought out each year, such as Toyota Landcruisers, Early Broncos, International Scouts, Jeeps of all kinds, picks of various kinds, and occasionally a Hummer. Each on, Saturday, There are several guided 4-wheel drive runs, each of a different rating, from the very difficult rock climbing for those brave and daring, to the more gentle ride with lots of scenery and some challenges for even the most novice of drivers. Also the Saturday night BBQ dinner is a primitive pit BBQ, the meat will be cooked over hardwood coals for 12 to 18 hours. On Sunday, we offer lots of fun; games for kids with lots of prizes, games for the adults, and drivers in their vehicles. Oh yes, we have developed over the years some very interesting vehicle games which may or may not require a co-driver or special "skills". Overall, it is an action packed weekend with the Saturday night barbecue, a big Sweepstakes Drawing with loads of prizes on Sunday night, lots of trophies, and lots of socializing for old and young, big and small! We invite any and all who desire to get together with other 4-wheel driver enthusiasts and to come out to meet and make new friends, get some off-road experience and best of all JUST HAVE FUN! CA4WDC Safety Requirements will be enforced: Roll bar, Full roll cage or hard top, Working parking brake or Micro Lock, Tow strap or Rope, First Aid Kit, Jack & Tools capable of changing tires, Spare Tire within 3" of existing tires (no temporary spares allowed), Fire Extinguisher with gauge indicating good, Seat belts for all passengers, Antenna(s) must not exceed 54", Adequate attachment points front & rear, ex.- Tow Hooks, Receiver, etc. Battery Hold-downs (no bungie cords).
