TRIP REPORT

LAST CHANCE CANYON
by Dennis Sullivan

We met on Abbott Road near the Campground at Red Rock State park. At about 9:35 we left with a total of 20 vehicles. After airing down at the bottom of Last Chance Canyon, we proceeded up the canyon towards Cudahy Camp. Someone in a CJ-5 asked to join our group. After about 10 minutes, he decided to make his own path and broke a front shaft U-joint. Mike & Rick got him turned around and headed back out the way we came, this time in 2wd.

The canyon was a bit narrow in a few places, and there were a couple of large rocks that had to be avoided as you made a turn, but all made it through with little problem.

We had a nice break at Cudahy Camp and continued our journey up "Steep Hill" where about the only one who had trouble was Dave "Hummer" Felando, who was wishing by now that he was driving his Jeep!

From there, we went to Burro Schmidt's for lunch and a tour of the tunnel. After an hour lunch, we started off only to be held up with what we thought were lost kids. When all were accounted for, off we went to the intersection of EP15 and EP100. Here, Dave Felando and his Hummer and the Montero party headed home down Mesquite Canyon to return the rented Hummer.

Our FITS group with the remaining 18 vehicles traveled EP15 to EP26 and stopped at Sheep Springs. After a 15 minute break, we backtracked a mile and a half and climbed a couple of knarly hills to EP11, and back to the highway.

We had twenty vehicles begin the trip and no significant damage to any of them including the Suburban driven by Anna Chersky!

The star of the trip had to be the Hummer driven by Dave "Will it really fit through there?" Felando. Despite all its disadvantages he was still able to keep up with the group. Special thanks to Jon and Dale Rice, James Sullivan and Mel Montgomery and Jerry MacDonald for their help on Friday's prerun. Also to the Kellys for assuming there normal position as caboose.

Attending were: Elaine Sullivan, Andy Vique, Mike & Carol Kelly, Ric Jones riding with Dave "Hummer" & Tony Felando, Rick & Suzy Schaffer, Chuck Lobaugh, Anna & Brad & Laura Chersky, Brad Quick and Neil Bromagem, Don Stenger, Jim Bays, Steve Frank & girls, Dave & Grace Trice, John "Phantom" Lee, Jerry Jewett & Mike Preis, Jay & Ellen Jimenez, John and Lisa Uhern with Kevin & Dillon, and Mark Holiday with son Jake.

Thanks to all for the greatest run so far this century!

IN MEMORY

I am very sorry to report that Bernadine Wallace passed away January 18, at the age of 75. She has been sick off and on for some time. She was a great lady that we all enjoyed and we will miss her very much. Our best wishes go out to her husband Sherman "Bonzai" and son James and the rest of the family.

MORE HUMMER STUFF

A couple of months ago I got a letter asking me if I would like to take place in a survey about sport utility vehicles. Since they were paying $75 for something I usually give quite freely (my opinion), I said why not? Well, they saw that I was a "Serious" off-roader, and they asked if I would like to take part in a discussion group (another $75), that was a no brainer!

It turned out that it involved the design of the new Hummer II, a downsized version "for the masses" as they called it. They asked us which of the designs they had that we liked best, and how we felt about various options and design requirements.

Well, at the Detroit auto show, GM who bought the rights to the new Hummer, revealed the Hummer II with a press release and a couple of pictures. The press release sounded like our wish list! They made it very clear that they wanted this first to be a very capable off-road vehicle and everything else was secondary! We all agreed that if they could come up with this vehicle and have it cost under $30,000 we'd buy one tomorrow. We'll see!

CONGRATULATIONS

I forgot go to mention last month that the Races won second prize in the vehicle decorating contest at Toys For Tots in December. They had Santa and his Reindeer going from their trailer up over the Jeep. The theme was "Grandma got run over by a reindeer", with Grandma laying across their hood. They had an arm attached to the windshield wiper, and when activated, Grandma waved!
